When WordPress or a webhook fails

An article that WordPress or a webhook endpoint doesn't take still goes live on your feed. CitedSEO keeps track of what didn't arrive and sends it again once the place can take it.

Nothing changes for the article: it still goes live on its day, on your feed. A connection failing never unpublishes an article or holds one back. CitedSEO notes each article that didn't reach your WordPress or a webhook endpoint, says so in the sidebar's Needs you list, and sends it again once that place can take it: when you reconnect it, add it again, or press Try again.

What still happens

  • The article is marked Published in Articles, as if nothing went wrong, and it's on your feed for your site's code to read.
  • Every other place keeps getting it. If WordPress fails, your webhook endpoints are still sent the article, and the other way round.
  • Nothing is taken down anywhere. What's already on your WordPress stays as it is.

CitedSEO keeps one record for each article and each place it sends to: waiting, sent or failed, and why. That's how it knows what to send again.

How you can tell

The sidebar's Needs you list shows one item for each place, with one button:

What it saysWhat it meansButton
"WordPress signed me out"WordPress stopped accepting CitedSEO's application password.Reconnect
"Your webhook at … needs adding again"CitedSEO can no longer sign what it sends to that endpoint.Add it again
"“…” didn’t reach WordPress", or "3 articles didn’t reach example.com"The place is still connected, but it didn't take the articles named.Try again

You're also told once, by email and anywhere else you get alerts, unless you turned off Something needs fixing in Settings › Notifications.

How what it missed is sent again

CitedSEO doesn't keep calling a place that turned it away. It sends again once the place can take it:

  • Reconnect WordPress in Settings › Publishing with a new application password. See WordPress signed CitedSEO out.
  • Add it again: add the same endpoint address in Settings › Webhooks, and put its new signing secret in your code.
  • Try again in Needs you, once WordPress or your endpoint is answering. CitedSEO says "I’ll send them again shortly", and the item leaves the list. See My webhook isn't receiving articles.

Each one puts every article that place missed back in line, and CitedSEO sends them within about 15 minutes. If they fail again, the item comes back.

What gets sent

CitedSEO sends each article as it's live now, not the version that missed. If an article changed twice while WordPress was signed out, WordPress gets the latest one. An article you took down while WordPress was signed out has its post moved to the trash once you reconnect.

WordPress gets each article as one post, found again by a mark CitedSEO puts in it, so sending again updates the post that's there rather than adding a second one.

A new article WordPress missed

A new article that didn't reach WordPress goes live at the address it would have under Settings › Site details › Where articles go. Once WordPress takes it, the article moves to the post's address, and your webhook endpoints are sent the article again with the new address.

If you remove it instead

Pressing Disconnect on WordPress, or removing an endpoint in Settings › Webhooks, drops what CitedSEO was keeping for that place, so nothing missed is sent there. Articles already on your WordPress stay.
